Our verdict on Betway
Betway South Africa is one of the best-known names in local sports betting: title sponsor of the Betway Premiership, partner of the Springboks and SA20, and owned by NYSE-listed Super Group. It holds a Western Cape bookmaker licence first issued in 2016 and a second licence from the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator. The sportsbook is broad, the multi-bet rewards are extensive, and the payment list fits the way South Africans actually move money. The weak points are a small welcome offer and a heavy load of payout and account-lock complaints on HelloPeter.
This Betway review asks what a South African punter actually gets: a lot of football, a lot of ways to deposit, and a promotion calendar designed almost entirely around multi-bets. If you place weekend accumulators on the PSL and the Premier League, Betway’s Free Bet Club, Win Boost and Bet Saver all reward behaviour you already have.
The welcome offer is modest. Betway currently gives new customers a No Deposit Welcome Pack: an R10 free bet plus free spins and free “flights” on two casino-style games. It costs nothing, but treat it as a free trial rather than a reason to join.
The bigger caution is service. Betway’s HelloPeter profile shows a 1.9 star average from 1,147 reviews in the past 12 months, with Payouts & Billing scoring lowest, followed by account access and customer support. Betway does answer most negative reviews, and some complaints involve verification, so upload your FICA documents on day one.
Betway is also in the news, including a Reserve Bank exchange-control probe in which no infraction has been established; we cover it in the reputation section.
PSL and Premier League fans, multi-bet punters who already bet R250 or more a week, people who want to deposit with vouchers, at a till or through their banking app, and anyone who values a long-licensed brand with a listed parent company.
Punters chasing a large welcome bonus, anyone who only places small singles (most rewards need multis), and people who want live streaming, which Betway’s help centre does not list. If fast, friction-free payouts matter most to you, read the HelloPeter section before you deposit.

How we reviewed Betway
We rate every bookmaker with the same nine-category model, covering safety, registration and FICA, bonuses, payments, sportsbook, usability, support, responsible gambling and reputation. For this Betway review we used Betway’s own pages: the registration page, the offers page, the Betway Pedia help centre and the Betway blog. We also used the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board’s licence holder register, the Apple App Store listing, Betway’s HelloPeter profile and South African news coverage from amaBhungane, MyBroadband, SuperSport, the PSL and trade outlets. Is Betway legit? Licensing and safety
Yes, Betway is a licensed South African bookmaker. Its registration page names Raging River Trading (Pty) Ltd (registration number 2011/134505/07) as the company licensed to promote Betway South Africa. Raging River holds Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board (WCGRB) bookmaker licence 10181496-011, which Betway’s registration page says was first issued on 1 December 2016.
The WCGRB’s own “Licence Holders” register lists Raging River Trading (Pty) Ltd under bookmakers, so you can confirm the licence with the regulator.
Betway now names a second licensed company in its help centre footer. Eastern Dawn Sports (Pty) Ltd (registration 2021/915692/07) holds Mpumalanga Economic Regulator bookmaker licence 9-2-1-09658, issued on 25 April 2023.
Who owns Betway South Africa?
Betway’s ultimate parent is Super Group (SGHC) Ltd, which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange and based in Guernsey. Raging River is the local operating company. amaBhungane’s June 2026 reporting also names a Maltese holding company, Alphamedia Limited, in the group structure.
A listed parent publishes results and answers to shareholders. SBC News reported Super Group’s second-quarter 2026 profit at $123 million, with Africa revenue of $310 million in the quarter.
Raging River’s PAIA manual gives a physical address at Waterview Park, 1 Waterview Close, Century City, and a switchboard number of +27 21 879 0200. A related company, Osiris Trading (Pty) Ltd in Melrose Arch, Johannesburg, is the responsible party under Betway South Africa’s Privacy Notice.
What to do if you have a dispute with Betway
Start with Betway’s support team and do it in writing where you can, so you have a record. Note the date, your username, the bet or transaction reference and the amount, and keep screenshots.
If Betway does not resolve the problem, you can take it to the regulator. Betway’s own promotion terms (for its Rising Riches Jackpot) say disputes are escalated to the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board, which is the board that licenses Raging River. Betway’s help centre footer also names Eastern Dawn Sports, which is licensed by the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator. A HelloPeter review is not a formal complaint and does not replace the regulator route.
Licence and safety is 12% of the overall score. How we rate bookmakers
Betway sign-up and FICA
Betway’s help centre describes a six-step registration. You enter your mobile number and a password, your name and surname exactly as they appear on your ID, an optional email address, an optional promo code, your ID or passport number, your date of birth, your source of funds and your preferred language. The welcome pack can be claimed during registration or within 7 days afterwards.
Take care with the personal details. Betway says customers cannot edit their own name, ID or passport number, or date of birth once the account is open, so a typo means a call to support.
Betway FICA: how verification works
Betway tries to verify you automatically. If that does not work, its help centre says you will be asked to complete facial recognition the first time you log in, and you may see an “Upload Now” pop-up asking for documents. Betway emails you once you are verified, and then you can deposit and bet.
The documents Betway lists on its “Why FICA?” page are:
- One proof of identity: Smart ID card (both sides), passport, or driver’s licence (both sides)
- A bank statement for a South African bank account, no older than 3 months from your registration date
- Copies must be in colour, with all four corners visible and every detail legible
- Expired passports are not accepted
Betway says verification may take up to 48 hours, and longer at peak times and over weekends. It also warns that accounts which fail FICA may be suspended.
Our advice: do your Betway FICA on the day you sign up, even if you only plan to use the free bet. HelloPeter reviewers report verification being demanded only after a win, so finish FICA before you need to withdraw. Have a clear colour copy of a recent statement from the account you plan to withdraw to.
Betway sportsbook: sports, live betting and features
Betway’s brand is closely tied to South African football. The App Store listing names soccer, basketball, tennis, rugby, baseball, golf and cricket, and Betway’s help centre covers horse racing, Soccer Tote and Lucky Numbers. Esports (League of Legends, Call of Duty and FIFA) are listed too.
Sports and leagues
Betway became title sponsor of South Africa’s top flight in July 2024, when the PSL announced the Betway Premiership, and SuperSport reported that the 2026/27 season is Betway’s third as title sponsor. Our PSL betting guide explains the main markets and how to approach them.
Betway also partners the Springboks and SA20, and in August 2026 announced a Manchester United principal partnership.
For horse racing, Betway’s help page describes fixed odds and tote betting, win, place and each-way bets, and exotics including quinella, exacta, trifecta and first 4.
Live betting and cash out
Live betting sits under its own “Live” tab, where odds turn green or red as they move and a search bar and league filter help you find matches.
Cash out is available in full or in part, both before an event and in play. Betway notes that a cash out offer will never exceed your potential win. Cashing out forfeits Bet Saver and makes 1UP, 2UP and 3UP bets ineligible.
Bet builder and other features
- Build a Bet: combine 2 to 10 selections from one soccer match into a single bet. It is pre-match only, is placed as a single, and cannot be cashed out.
- Book-a-Bet: save a betslip as a code to place later or share. Pre-match only.
- 1UP, 2UP and 3UP Match Result: on selected competitions, a 1X2 bet on a team pays as a winner once that team leads by 1, 2 or 3 goals within 90 minutes, depending on the version. Draw selections are excluded.
- Soccer Tote: listed in Betway’s help centre and site navigation.
- USSD betting: dial *120*48463# and choose option 3 to bet without the app or data.
- Data Free: a limited time offer that lets you bet on sports and play Four To Score without using data. Card and Ozow deposits still need data.
Live streaming and bet changes
Betway’s help centre does not list live streaming of sport, so do not open an account expecting to watch matches. Bets cannot be cancelled once placed. You can void at most two pre-match selections from a multi, at least one pre-match selection must remain, and live and outright bets cannot be voided by the customer. Postponed games that are rescheduled within 48 hours keep your bet live; otherwise the selection is void.
Betway bet limits and payouts
The table below covers the limits Betway states. Betway’s help pages do not publish a rand cap on winnings per bet or per day, so before you place a big multi, open the terms and conditions on betway.co.za and look for any maximum payout clause. If your potential return is close to a limit, reduce the stake.

Worked example: you place your R10 welcome free bet on a single at odds of 3.00. If it wins, the total return is R30, but because a free bet stake is not returned, Betway credits R20 (the winnings minus the R10 free bet amount) as cash. A R10 cash bet at the same odds would return the full R30.
Lucky Numbers shows how quickly returns can grow. At Betway’s top quoted multiplier of 120,000x, a R1 stake would return R120,000. That is a ceiling, not a typical outcome.
Betway bonuses and promotions

No Deposit Welcome Pack
Betway’s offers page describes the No Deposit Welcome Pack as:
- An R10 free bet for sports
- 10 free spins on 12 Masks of Fire Drums
- 10 free flights on Red Rocket
It is for new customers aged 18 or older who are SA citizens or permanent residents. Betway says the pack is “automatically credited once you’ve signed up”, and you can claim it immediately or later; it stays visible on your home page for 7 days after registration. No promo code is needed.
Betway’s general free bet rules apply to the R10 free bet: you must use the full amount in one bet, you can use it on singles or multis, and the stake is not returned if you win. So an R10 free bet at odds of 2.50 pays R15 in cash if it wins (R25 total return minus the R10 free bet).
One thing to watch: Betway’s own pages disagree. A Betway blog post described a different pack, with other games, and said a minimum deposit was needed to activate it; the current offers page calls it a no-deposit pack. Rely on the current offers page and the full promotion terms, and confirm before you deposit. The offers page does not state minimum odds, expiry or maximum winnings for the free bet, or wagering on the spins and flights, so check those terms too. Free Bet Club
Free Bet Club is Betway’s weekly loyalty promotion, open to new and existing customers, and the help page title promises “R50 in Weekly Free Bets”. To qualify, stake at least R250 on multi-bet slips during the weekly cycle. Each slip needs at least 3 legs, every leg must be priced at 1.15 or higher, and the combined odds must be at least 1.50. Free bet stakes do not count towards the R250. Rewards are issued on Mondays and Wednesdays.
Example: a treble at 1.20, 1.30 and 1.25 has combined odds of 1.95, so it qualifies. Swap one leg for a 1.10 favourite and the whole slip no longer counts. Betway runs the week from Monday 00:01 to Sunday 23:59 GMT, which is two hours behind South African time, so the week actually closes at 01:59 on Monday SA time. Bets placed in the early hours of Monday count towards the previous week.
Ongoing offers
- Win Boost: Betway says “for each leg added to your Multi Bet betslip, we’ll boost your winnings by up to 150%.” Check the current boost per leg in Betway’s promotion terms before you build the slip.
- Bet Saver: pays a cash return on a multi-bet even when selections lose. The amount is dynamic (based on odds, stake and number of selections) and shown in your betslip. Singles, outrights, tournament bets and Draw No Bet are excluded, and using cash out or player void forfeits it.
- 1UP, 2UP and 3UP: early payout on 1X2 football bets on selected competitions once your team leads by the set margin within 90 minutes.
- Betway Rewards: according to Betway’s blog, every bet earns points, 1 point is worth R1, and you can convert points to cash in your Betway wallet at any time and withdraw it.
- Bet Influencer: share a betslip code and earn 4% of the revenue from wagers placed with it. Slips need at least 5 selections at 1.10 or higher. Earnings are capped at R20,000 per code and R100,000 per account per week, and are paid on Fridays.
Do not add legs just to qualify for any of these; longer multis lose far more often.
Betway deposits and withdrawals
Betway lists a very wide range of payment methods, from cards and instant EFT to retail vouchers, cardless ATM deposits and USSD. Betway’s help centre does not publish a single Betway minimum deposit or withdrawal limits for each method, so check the amounts shown for your chosen method before you pay. Which withdrawal method should you use?
- You have a bank account and want the money there: EFT is the straightforward choice. See our guide to EFT betting sites.
- You want cash without a bank account: Absa CashSend, which Betway says is free and needs no Absa account.
- You bank with FNB: FNB eWallet lets you draw cash at an FNB ATM; have your ID copy ready for the first time.
- You want a voucher: 1ForYou, with Betway asking you to allow up to 24 hours.
- You use Nedbank: Send-iMali, but collect within 48 hours before the code expires.
How to withdraw from Betway, step by step
- Make sure your FICA documents are approved before you request a withdrawal.
- Log in on the app or website and open the withdrawal section of your account.
- Choose your method: EFT, FNB eWallet, Absa CashSend, Standard Bank Instant Money, 1ForYou or Nedbank Send-iMali.
- Enter the amount you want to withdraw.
- Confirm, then watch for the SMS with your PIN or code and collect promptly (within 48 hours for Send-iMali).
Fees to know about
- Absa CashSend withdrawals are free, according to Betway’s help page.
- Betway’s help pages do not list fees for EFT, card or other methods, so check the cashier screen before you confirm.
- Your own bank may charge its normal fees for transfers or ATM collections.
Betway Lucky Numbers, Betgames and other games
Betway Lucky Numbers lets you bet on lottery-style draws, and Betway’s help centre has a dedicated guide to UK49s. Its blog says you could win up to 120,000x your stake.
Betgames appears in the App Store description and the site navigation. Betway’s lite site also lists Aviator and JetX, and the welcome pack’s free spins and free flights are for 12 Masks of Fire Drums and Red Rocket.
This review focuses on sports betting, so we do not cover Betway’s casino-style games in depth. Be aware that this part of the market is under regulatory pressure. In October 2025 the National Gambling Board told bookmakers to stop offering casino-style games after a Supreme Court of Appeal ruling, and Betway said the ruling “does not amount to a ban on online betting”. What is available may change.
Betway app and mobile site
The Betway app for iPhone is listed as “Betway Sports Betting & Casino”, with Raging River Trading (Pty) Ltd as the seller. On testing, it was rated 4.5 out of 5 from 274k ratings, at version 11.4.2. It is a 31.7 MB download, needs iOS 13.0 or later, and is for users aged 18 and over.
Android users download the app from Betway’s site rather than from Google Play; Betway’s help centre says it is also available on Huawei AppGallery. Betway’s help page explains that “real money gambling apps aren’t allowed in the Google Play Store”, so you download the APK from Betway’s site and allow installs from unknown sources in your phone’s settings. Only download it from betway.co.za.

Betway customer support
Betway says its customer support runs 24/7. The App Store listing names live chat, WhatsApp, phone calls, email, Facebook and Twitter, and the lightweight version of the site links to live chat in its header and to Betway’s Telegram and Instagram accounts.
The Betway customer care number listed on Betway’s HelloPeter business profile is 0861 787 250. Note that the WhatsApp number 076 675 0710 in Betway’s footer belongs to the National Responsible Gambling Programme, not Betway’s support team, so do not send account questions there.
- Quick questions (a bet, a promotion not showing): start with live chat, which Betway says runs around the clock.
- Withdrawals and account locks: start on chat or phone, then confirm in writing so you have a record with a date.
- FICA problems: re-upload clear, colour copies through your account first, then contact support if the status does not change.
Be prepared for some waiting. HelloPeter reviewers cite long phone hold times (one mentions two hours) and unanswered emails, and Customer Support scores 1.1 out of 5 on Betway’s HelloPeter profile.
Responsible gambling at Betway
Betway’s footer carries the National Responsible Gambling Programme (NRGP) helpline, 0800 006 008, and its WhatsApp HELP line, 076 675 0710. It also lists an external responsible gambling support line, 080 000 0407, and the message “Winners know when to stop”.
If you need a break, Betway’s FAQ has said you can self-exclude through customer service, and that during a self-exclusion period your account will not be reactivated. Check Betway’s responsible gambling page for the options available today, and use your bank’s limits if you need a hard stop.
Your bank may be able to set a spending limit on your card or block gambling transactions.
Some practical habits help too:
- Set a weekly budget before the weekend and stop when it is gone.
- Do not chase multis or Free Bet Club targets you would not otherwise bet.
- Withdraw winnings rather than leaving them in your balance.

Betway reputation and complaints
We checked Betway’s HelloPeter profile when we tested it. It shows a TrustIndex of 3.5 out of 10 and an average of 1.9 stars from 1,147 reviews in the past 12 months, ranking Betway sixth in the Betting & Gambling category. The category scores are Payouts & Billing 1.0, Account Access 1.1, Customer Support 1.1, Platform Experience 1.4 and Service Quality 3.4 (all out of 5). The eight latest reviews were all 1 star, and Betway had replied to three of them at the time of our check.
Three themes come up again and again: withdrawals not paid or bouncing (including eWallet and EFT payouts), locked or blocked accounts and verification demanded after a win, and long waits for support. On the positive side, Betway is verified on HelloPeter, replies to 96% of negative reviews, and takes about 21 hours on average to respond.
Betway has also been in the news:
- Reserve Bank probe: amaBhungane reported in June 2026 that the SA Reserve Bank’s financial surveillance department is examining historical fund transfers to foreign entities for possible exchange control breaches. A R30 million refundable deposit was involved, no infraction has been established, and the matter is ongoing.
- Aviator trademark: in May 2026, trade news reported that Aviator LLC had started legal proceedings against Betway in South Africa over use of the AVIATOR name.
- Casino games directive: in October 2025 the National Gambling Board told bookmakers to stop offering casino-style games after a court ruling; this applied across the industry.
Tips for betting at Betway
- Do FICA on day one. Upload your ID and a recent bank statement when you register.
- Use the free bet on sensible odds. The stake is not returned, so an R10 free bet at 2.00 pays R10 in cash.
- Build multis that qualify for Free Bet Club. Keep every leg at 1.15 or above, the combined price at 1.50 or more, and use at least 3 legs, or the slip will not count.
- Think before you cash out. Cashing out forfeits Bet Saver and rules out 1UP, 2UP and 3UP.
- Check the maximum payout. Check Betway’s terms for any maximum payout before big accumulators, and size your stake accordingly.
- Deposit what you mean to bet. A HelloPeter reviewer said Betway would not pay out part of a deposit until it was wagered; Betway’s reply did not confirm a rule, so check the terms first.
