Our verdict on TopBet

TopBet is a licensed South African bookmaker with a real retail footprint, some of the most flexible payout options we have seen for unbanked punters, and a fair welcome bonus. It is also a young online operation with strict payout caps, a 12-hour support line and a poor complaints record on HelloPeter. It suits casual punters who bet small, use vouchers or Instant Money, and like having a branch nearby. Big-stakes single bettors should look elsewhere.

TopBet’s biggest strength is how you get money in and out. You can deposit with cards, Ozow, Walletdoc, a bank transfer or four retail vouchers from R5, and withdraw to Standard Bank Instant Money, FNB eWallet, ABSA CashSend, Nedbank, an Instant EFT that TopBet says lands within 30 minutes of processing, or an OTT or 1Voucher PIN by SMS. Few South African bookmakers make it this easy for someone without a bank card to cash out.

The welcome package is also better than most. New players get R30 for sports or horse racing plus R15 for selected slots without depositing, and the first deposit is matched 100% up to R1,000. The rules are strict, with singles only at odds of 3.00 or higher, but they are published in full and the winnings cap of R2,000 is reasonable for the size of the bonus.

The weaknesses are just as clear. A single bet on football, rugby, cricket or tennis can pay out at most R10,000, however big the odds or the stake. TopBet’s own terms give it up to 48 to 72 hours to activate a withdrawal, and say requests are considered during working hours. Customer support runs from 07:00 to 19:00. On HelloPeter, TopBet’s TrustIndex was 2.1 out of 10 when we checked, with withdrawal delays and FICA hold-ups the most common complaints, and the company does not reply to reviews.

Payments and bonuses are TopBet’s strongest areas, while its complaints record and short support hours weigh it down.

How we reviewed TopBet

We rate every bookmaker with the same scoring model: nine weighted categories, from licensing to reputation, each built from the same set of questions. For this review we went through topbet.co.za in full, including the terms and conditions, the payments, FICA, win limits and self-exclusion pages and the rules of every promotion. We also browsed the sportsbook, checked news coverage of the company and read TopBet’s HelloPeter profile. Our sources are the bookmaker itself, the gambling boards, news outlets and public review platforms, never other betting review sites. See how we rate bookmakers.

Is TopBet legit? Licensing and safety

Yes. TopBet is a legal, licensed bookmaker in South Africa. The footer on every page of topbet.co.za names two licensed companies that trade as Topbet SA:

• Hatsy Pty Ltd (registration 2021/566646/07), licensed by the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board under licence 10190445-004, issued on 1 October 2025.
• Colman Pty Ltd (registration 2026/028675/07), licensed by the Eastern Cape Gambling Board under licence ECBM 070, issued on 3 July 2026, with an address in Gqeberha.

Publishing both company registration numbers and licence issue dates is better practice than many local sites manage. TopBet also has a page listing contact details for both gambling boards, so you know who to go to if a dispute cannot be resolved with the bookmaker.

Two things are worth knowing. First, the online business is young. Hatsy was registered in 2021, its Western Cape licence was issued in October 2025, and the Eastern Cape licence is from July 2026. Second, the site does not explain which licence applies to which customers, or whether players in every province are covered. That is a question for TopBet, not a reason to avoid it.

The brand got a high-profile backer in November 2024, when Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune told FARPost and Sunday World that he was a part-owner of TopBet, not just its ambassador. The site now carries “powered by Itu Khune 32” under its logo.

On security, the public site runs on HTTPS and TopBet publishes a privacy policy. We found no regulator sanctions against TopBet in a news search, and no independent testing body is named on the site.

What to do if you have a dispute with TopBet

Start with TopBet itself. Call or WhatsApp support between 07:00 and 19:00, or email mobi@topbet.co.za, and quote your account number and any withdrawal or bet reference. Keep screenshots of the betslip, the balance and the messages you send. If the problem is not resolved, you can complain to the board that licenses TopBet. Its own Gambling Board Contact page lists the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board (021 480 7400, info@wcgrb.co.za) and the Eastern Cape Gambling Board (043 702 8300, communications@ecgb.co.za). A licensed operator answers to these boards, which is one of the main reasons to bet only with licensed South African sites.

Signing up and getting FICA-verified

You can browse every sport and price on TopBet without an account, which is the right way round. When you join, TopBet adds the R30 sports credit and R15 casino credit automatically, with no promo code needed.

TopBet is an accountable institution under the Financial Intelligence Centre Act, so you must verify your identity before you can withdraw. Its FICA page asks for a copy of one of these:

• a South African ID document
• a driver’s licence
• a valid passport

You can upload it in your account, email it to fica@topbet.co.za, or send it on WhatsApp to 061 910 2589. The WhatsApp option is useful if you are joining on a phone and do not want to fiddle with uploads.

Be ready for more than the ID, though. TopBet’s terms allow it to ask for proof of address, such as a utility bill or bank statement no older than three months, and to ask where your betting money comes from. Until FICA is complete, TopBet says it cannot pay out any balance. Several recent HelloPeter reviewers said their proof of address sat pending for days. Our advice is to complete FICA straight after signing up, before you deposit, so a win is never stuck waiting for paperwork.

FICA also matters for the bonus. The first deposit match is only added once your identity check is approved, so a slow verification can eat into the seven-day window for the deposit offer.

The TopBet sportsbook

TopBet’s sportsbook is built on a third-party platform and is laid out like most modern South African sites: sports across the top, popular leagues down the left, and the betslip on the right. Tabs take you to live betting, top leagues, outrights and match statistics.

Sports and leagues

On testing, TopBet listed 1,858 football events, 285 basketball events, 153 American football events and 100 tennis events, plus rugby, cricket, boxing, baseball, cycling, darts, golf, Aussie rules, Formula 1, motorcycling and specials. Its top leagues menu includes the PSL alongside the Premier League, Championship, Champions League, Europa League, the big European leagues, the NBA, NFL, NHL, the United Rugby Championship and Super Rugby.

All the South African staples are covered: PSL betting, rugby, cricket, horse racing with its own section, and Lucky Numbers. Event counts change daily, so treat these figures as a snapshot.

Live betting and cash out

TopBet offers in-play betting, and live matches show a running count of available markets. Its Early Cash Out works on multibets only. The first selection must already have won, every selection needs odds of 1.30 or more, and you cannot cash out while one of the matches on your ticket is being played. You accept TopBet’s offer and the ticket ends. Using cash out also cancels any Multiboost on the ticket, and cashed-out bets do not count towards bonus wagering.

Multiboost and book-a-bet

Multiboost adds a percentage to the winnings of pre-match multibets placed with your own money. It starts at 2% for two selections at 1.30 or more and rises to 150% for 50 or more. For a typical four-leg ticket the boost is 5%, so it is a pleasant extra rather than a reason to pick TopBet. The betslip also accepts book-a-bet codes, which lets you load a ticket a friend has shared, or one prepared at a branch.

TopBet maximum payouts: read this before you bet big

This is the part of TopBet most punters never read, and it matters more than the bonus. TopBet publishes a win limits schedule that caps what any bet can pay, whatever the odds.

In practice, a R1,000 single on a team at 15.00 would normally return R15,000, but TopBet would pay R10,000. A R5 multibet cannot pay more than R150,000, however many legs win. The daily limit also applies to groups of customers backing the same selections, and TopBet’s terms let it reduce or void a bet that was accepted above these limits by mistake.

Here is how the caps can change a bet. Say you put R200 on a five-leg PSL and Premier League multibet at combined odds of 4,500. The full return would be R900,000, but the five-leg cap is R750,000, so that is the most TopBet would pay. Put R5 on the same ticket and the R1 to R9 stake rule caps it at R150,000. Before you place a long-odds ticket, check which limit applies.

For most casual punters these caps never come into play. If you regularly back big-priced singles with large stakes, they are a reason to keep an account elsewhere as well.

One more term to know: under TopBet’s rules, a 6% betting tax is deducted from winnings on horse racing, including multibets that include a horse race.

Compare TopBet’s bonus with other bookmakers

R30 + R15 sign-up bonus

New players get R30 for single bets on sports or horse racing and R15 for three named slots, without depositing. Both expire 24 hours after they are added. To withdraw winnings from the R30, you must bet R150 in singles at odds of 3.00 or more, and deposit at least R50 and bet it once. The most you can withdraw from each part is R200. It is a genuine free trial, but only if you sign up when you have time to use it.

100% first deposit match up to R1,000

Deposit R50 to R1,000 within seven days of joining, bet that deposit once at odds of 2.00 or more, and pass FICA, and TopBet matches it. You then have five days to bet three times the bonus in singles at 3.00 or more. The bonus stake is not returned on winning bets, and bonus winnings are capped at R2,000. If you understand how wagering requirements work, this is a fair offer. The singles-only rule is the catch for anyone who normally bets multis.

Ongoing offers

• Weekly sports cashback: up to 10% of qualifying weekly losses back as bonus money, from R10 to R1,000, if you are down at least R100. It must be bet three times in singles at 3.00 or more within five days.
• Multiboost: 2% to 150% extra on winning pre-match multibets of two or more selections at 1.30 or more.
• Birthday bonus: a R50 bet for active, verified players, to be used in one bet at odds above 3.00 within five days.
• Predictor: a free-to-enter score prediction game, promoted with the challenge “Can you beat Itu Khune at his own game?”, with advertised prizes of up to R13,000. You need a verified TopBet account to claim a prize.
• Aviator welcome flights: up to ten R2 flights with your first deposit.

There is no loyalty or VIP scheme. Overall, the offers are real and published in full, but the wagering rules are strict and a few terms, such as how the slot bonus’s odds rule works, are unclear.

TopBet deposits and withdrawals

Payments are TopBet’s strongest area. The range of methods suits South Africans with or without a bank card.

The minimum deposit in TopBet’s terms is R10, and vouchers start at R5, so it is easy to start small. Capitec Pay is not listed. If you prefer vouchers, our voucher betting sites guide explains how each one works.

One thing to watch with cards: TopBet’s terms let it pass on the transaction fee its card processor charges, and if you deposit by card, bet less than 20% of it and ask for a refund, TopBet can charge a R100 administration fee. The payments page does not mention either fee. If you want to avoid any chance of card fees, deposit by Instant EFT or voucher instead.

Being able to withdraw to a cellphone wallet or a voucher PIN is a real advantage for players without a bank account. Instant EFT is the best option for most people, with a high R30,000 limit and weekend processing.

The fine print tempers those speeds. TopBet’s terms say it will “endeavour to process” withdrawals within 48 hours, that activating a request may take 48 to 72 hours, and that requests are considered during working hours. The 30-minute Instant EFT figure starts after processing, not when you press withdraw. HelloPeter reviewers describe withdrawals held for manual approval. Plan on same-day at best and up to three days at worst.

Which withdrawal method should you use?

Pick the method by how much you are taking out and how you want to receive it.

• Up to R3,000, no bank account: Standard Bank Instant Money, FNB eWallet, ABSA CashSend or Nedbank’s equivalent. You collect the cash at an ATM or till point with the PIN sent to your phone. Double-check the cellphone number before you submit, because cancelling after processing costs R10.
• Up to R3,000, want to keep betting or spend online: an OTT or 1Voucher PIN by SMS, or straight into the 1Voucher App. The app option cannot be cancelled once processed.
• R3,000 to R30,000: Instant EFT through OTT or Walletdoc. It has the highest fast-payout limit and TopBet says it clears on weekends and public holidays.
• Over R30,000: standard EFT to a bank account in your own name, which TopBet says can take up to 24 hours to reflect.

Whichever you choose, the account receiving the money must be in your name, and your FICA documents must be approved first.

How to withdraw from TopBet, step by step

1. Complete FICA: upload your ID, driver’s licence or passport, or send it to fica@topbet.co.za or WhatsApp 061 910 2589, and wait for approval.
2. If you used a bonus, finish its wagering and check the winnings have moved from your bonus wallet to your cash balance.
3. Open the withdrawal option in your account, choose your method, enter the amount and your details, and submit.
4. Note the reference number. If the money has not arrived within TopBet’s stated time, contact support with that reference.

Fees to know about

• R10 to cancel an Instant Money withdrawal once it has been processed.
• An administration fee of at least 10% if you withdraw money you deposited but never bet.
• 1Voucher App payouts cannot be cancelled once processed.

Horse racing, Lucky Numbers and other games

Horse racing has its own section on TopBet, with meetings from South Africa and abroad and tote bets. Tote payouts are capped, for example at R500,000 on a win bet, and can never be more than the net pool. Lucky Numbers lets you bet on Lotto and Powerball draws through three products, Crazy Lotto Numbers, Crazy POWA Numbers and Crazy Multi Numbers, where you can back single numbers, combinations or the bonus ball. Payouts are capped at R1 million per bet, and stakes of R1 to R9 at R150,000. TopBet also offers Aviator, SkyPilot, BetGames, virtual games and casino-style games, which this review does not cover.

TopBet app and mobile site

We could not find an official TopBet app. There is no download link on topbet.co.za, and the app called “topbet” on Google Play belongs to an unrelated Australian bookmaker, so do not install it expecting your TopBet SA account. Be careful with any APK offered on third-party sites.

TopBet works in a mobile browser, and several account tasks suit phone users, such as sending FICA documents by WhatsApp and receiving voucher PINs by SMS.

Customer support and branches

TopBet’s contact page lists a support call centre open from 07:00 to 19:00, the email address mobi@topbet.co.za, a WhatsApp and phone number (077 399 0483), a second line (011 465 5470) and a Telly Betting line for phone bets (010 593 5900). FICA documents have their own email and WhatsApp number.

The hours are the main weakness. A 12-hour support day means anyone with a problem on a Sunday evening match waits until morning. The contact page does not list live chat, although some HelloPeter reviewers mention chat agents.

TopBet’s retail network is a genuine plus. It lists 19 branches, including Soweto, Tembisa, Diepsloot, Mamelodi, Germiston, Midrand, Kempton Park and Johannesburg’s Bree Street in Gauteng, Polokwane, Mokopane, Namakgale and Jane Furse in Limpopo, and Howick in KwaZulu-Natal. Having somewhere to walk in with a problem is something most online-only bookmakers cannot offer.

Responsible gambling at TopBet

TopBet’s footer shows the National Responsible Gambling Programme’s free 24-hour counselling line (0800 006 008) and WhatsApp number (076 675 0710) on every page. Its self-exclusion page explains the legal programme: you complete a notice form and email it to TopBet, the exclusion lasts at least six months, and lifting it requires proof of counselling through the NRGP.

What is missing is self-service tools. We found no deposit limit, time-out or reality-check tools documented on the public site, and TopBet’s “Limits” page is about how much TopBet will pay out, not how much you can deposit. Set a budget before you deposit, and use your bank’s own limits if you need a hard stop.

TopBet reputation and complaints

Reputation is TopBet’s weakest area. When we checked HelloPeter, TopBet SA had a TrustIndex of 2.1 out of 10 from 15 reviews in the past 12 months, and it does not respond to reviews.

The recurring complaints were withdrawals held or delayed while deposits go through instantly, proof of address requests left pending for days, and unhelpful answers from support. One reviewer noted improvements to the website. Fifteen reviews is a small sample, and unhappy customers are always more likely to post. But a pattern of payout complaints with no public response is a red flag for us.

We found no negative press coverage of TopBet in the past 12 months. The one widely reported story was Khune’s part-ownership in November 2024, which raised questions about his position at Kaizer Chiefs rather than about TopBet’s conduct.

Tips for betting at TopBet

• Do FICA on day one. Withdrawals and the deposit match both wait on verification, and HelloPeter reviewers report delays. Have a proof of address under three months old ready in case it is requested.
• Deposit by Instant EFT or voucher. TopBet’s terms allow card processing fees to be passed on and a R100 fee on card refunds. Ozow, Walletdoc and vouchers avoid both.
• Only deposit what you plan to bet. Withdrawing money you never wagered can cost an administration fee of at least 10%.
• Keep bonus bets and your own bets separate. Bonus money must go on singles at 3.00 or more, while Multiboost only applies to multibets with your own money. Plan your week around which one you are using.
• Check the win limits before big singles. R10,000 is the most any single on football, rugby, cricket or tennis can pay.
• Raise problems before 19:00. Support closes in the evening, so query a stuck withdrawal or a settled bet early in the day.
