UFC betting sites and how MMA betting works
UFC betting looks simple until a fight is changed at the weigh-ins or ends in the first minute. This guide explains the main markets in rands, how late changes are settled, and when the fights actually happen in South Africa.
- Written for South African punters
- Independent reviews
- 18+ only
- The fight winner (moneyline) market is the starting point; method of victory, round betting and totals pay more but need a sharper read.
- Official weigh-ins take place the day before the event, and missed weight can change or cancel a fight.
- When a fight is cancelled, an opponent changes or the result is a draw or no contest, settlement depends on each bookmaker’s rules.
- Many main cards start in the early hours of the morning in South Africa, so check each event’s times on UFC.com.
How UFC betting works
Before looking at markets, it helps to know how a professional MMA bout is structured. Under the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts used by athletic commissions, each professional round lasts five minutes with a one-minute rest between rounds, and a bout can be scheduled for up to five rounds (Association of Boxing Commissions). The fight card on UFC.com and the bookmaker’s market both show whether a bout is scheduled for three or five rounds, and that number shapes every rounds-based bet.
A fight can end in a knockout (KO), a technical knockout (TKO), a submission, or a decision by three judges. Judges use the 10-point must system: the winner of each round gets 10 points and the loser nine or fewer. Decisions can be unanimous, split or majority. Less common results include draws, disqualifications, technical decisions and no contests. Those rare results are exactly where bookmaker rules matter most.
Fight winner (moneyline) in decimal odds
“Moneyline” is the American name for a straight bet on who wins. South African bookmakers show it as decimal odds: your stake multiplied by the odds is your total return.
Fighter A is 1.50 and Fighter B is 2.70. A R200 bet on Fighter A returns R300 if A wins (R100 profit). A R200 bet on Fighter B returns R540 if B wins (R340 profit). Either way, if your fighter loses, the R200 is gone.
Some bookmakers price the fight as a two-way market, others offer a three-way market that includes the draw. If you bet a two-way market and the fight is a draw, check the rules: it may be voided and your stake returned, but do not assume this.
Method of victory
Here you pick both the winner and how they win: by KO or TKO, by submission, or by decision. Bookmakers sometimes group KO and TKO together and sometimes treat disqualification separately, so read the market description.
Fighter A is 1.50 to win, but you expect a knockout. You put R100 on “Fighter A by KO/TKO” at 2.60. If A wins by TKO in round two, you get R260. If A wins on the judges’ scorecards, the bet loses, even though A won.
Round betting
Round betting is the most precise market: you pick the winner and the exact round the fight ends. Because the odds are long, small stakes are sensible.
R50 on Fighter B to win in round one at 9.00 returns R450 if B finishes the fight in the first round. A finish in round two, or a decision win, loses the bet.
Go the distance
This is a simple yes or no: will the fight last all of its scheduled rounds and go to the judges? “Yes” wins on any decision, whoever wins it. “No” wins if the fight is stopped early by any method.
Two cautious grapplers meet over three rounds. You put R100 on “fight goes the distance: yes” at 1.70. If the judges decide it, you get R170. A submission with ten seconds left in round three means the bet loses.
Total rounds (over and under)
Totals let you bet on how long the fight lasts, for example over or under 1.5 rounds. Half rounds are measured by time within a round, and bookmakers define the exact point in their rules, so check that definition before you bet.
You put R100 on over 1.5 rounds at 1.80. If the bookmaker’s rules put the halfway mark of round two at two minutes thirty seconds, a stoppage at three minutes into round two wins you R180, while a stoppage at one minute into round two loses.
Weigh-ins and late changes
MMA cards can change late. The UFC explains that official weigh-ins happen the day before fight night, usually between 9am and 11am local time. Non-title bouts allow one pound over the division limit, while title fights must come in at or below the limit. A fighter who misses weight can forfeit part of their purse to their opponent, the fight can go ahead at an agreed catchweight, or it can be cancelled (UFC weight classes and weigh-ins).
Injuries and illness also cause late withdrawals, and a replacement opponent may step in at short notice. For bettors, this means:
- Odds placed early in fight week can be based on a matchup that no longer exists.
- A fighter who struggled to make weight may not be at their best, and a short-notice replacement may not have had a full camp.
- Waiting until after the weigh-ins gives you more information, though the odds may have moved.
How cancelled or changed fights are settled
There is no single rule across South African bookmakers. Each one sets its own rules for combat sports, and they can differ on points that decide whether you are paid.
Before you bet on UFC, open the bookmaker’s betting rules and find the MMA or combat sports section. Check what happens if the fight is cancelled, if either fighter is replaced, if the bout changes from five rounds to three (or the reverse), if the fight is moved to another date or venue, and how draws, disqualifications and no contests are settled.
Pay special attention to multis. If one fight on a multi is cancelled and that leg is voided, check whether the multi carries on with the remaining legs at a lower combined price and how that is calculated.
When UFC events happen in South African time
The UFC events page lists start times for the early prelims, prelims and main card in US Eastern time. South Africa runs on GMT plus two hours, and the gap changes when the United States moves its clocks.
- A main card listed at 8pm Eastern daylight time starts at 02:00 the next morning in South Africa.
- A main card listed at 9pm Eastern standard time starts at 04:00 in South Africa.
- Some events, including those held in other time zones, are scheduled earlier in the US day and can land in the South African afternoon or evening.
Convert the time for each event rather than assuming. If you want to bet on the main event before you go to bed, remember that the headline bout is normally the last fight on the card and may start well after the main card begins. Live betting at 03:00 after a long night is also a good recipe for bets you will regret.

When comparing UFC betting sites, check how far down the card the markets go (some only price the main card fully), whether method of victory and round markets are available, whether live betting runs between rounds, and how clearly the combat sports rules are written. Our rating method explains how scores are built, and our bonuses page covers welcome offers and their wagering terms.
Responsible gambling
A UFC card has many fights, and it is easy to bet on all of them. Pick the fights you have actually studied and leave the rest. Set a deposit limit on your account before fight week, keep to it, and never bet money meant for rent, food or debt. If a loss on the prelims makes you want to raise your stakes on the main card, that is the moment to stop.
If gambling is causing problems for you or someone close to you, the National Responsible Gambling Programme offers free, confidential counselling on 0800 006 008. Betting is for people aged 18 and over.
Frequently asked questions
What time do UFC main cards start in South Africa?
Many main cards start in the early hours of the morning South African time, often from about 02:00 to 04:00, but some events start earlier. UFC.com lists each event’s times in US Eastern time, so convert them using South Africa’s GMT plus two hours.
What happens to my bet if the fight is cancelled?
That depends on the bookmaker. Its combat sports rules say whether a cancelled fight is voided with your stake returned, and what happens when an opponent is replaced or the fight is rescheduled. Read them before you bet.
What does “goes the distance” mean?
It means the fight lasts all of its scheduled rounds and is decided by the judges. Any knockout, technical knockout, submission or other stoppage before the final bell means it did not go the distance.
Is a draw possible in UFC betting?
Yes. The judges can score a fight as a draw. Some bookmakers offer a draw option in a three-way market; in a two-way market a draw may be voided. The bookmaker’s rules decide how it is settled.
