Every bookmaker answers the same questions in nine categories. Each category gets a score out of 10, and the overall score is a weighted average. The weights follow what matters most to South African punters: the betting itself, and getting your money in and out.

Is online betting legal in South Africa?
Yes, when the bookmaker holds a licence from a South African provincial gambling board. Each province has its own board, and each board publishes its list of licensed bookmakers. Many South African bookmakers are licensed in the Western Cape or Mpumalanga, and others hold licences from boards such as the Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, North West and KwaZulu-Natal.
A licensed bookmaker names its board and licence number in its site footer or terms, and every review on this site tells you which board it is. If a betting site has no South African licence, there is no local regulator to complain to if it refuses to pay you.
Before your first withdrawal, the bookmaker must complete FICA checks. Upload a copy of your ID and a recent proof of address soon after you sign up, so your first payout is not held up.

Frequently asked questions
Which is the best betting site in South Africa?
The scoreboard and top 5 at the top of this page show the current leaders on our scores. The best site for you depends on what you bet on, so see our picks for no-deposit bonuses, fast withdrawals, horse racing and Lucky Numbers, or use the scoreboard to rank bookmakers by the category you care about.
Which betting sites give a bonus without a deposit?
Among the bookmakers we have reviewed: Lucky Fish (R50 bonus and 50 spins), Shayabets (R50 free bet and 25 spins), GBets (R50 free bet and 50 spins once verified), Scorebet (R20 free bet and 10 spins), Betway (R10 free bet and spins) and ReadySetBet (50 spins once FICA is approved). Each has its own terms, so compare them above and read the review before you sign up.
Is it legal to bet online in South Africa?
Yes, with a bookmaker licensed by a South African provincial gambling board. Every bookmaker we rate shows such a licence, and each review names the board.
What do I need to open a betting account?
You must be 18 or older. You will need your South African ID or passport and a recent proof of address for FICA checks, which every licensed bookmaker completes before paying out winnings.
What do the scores mean?
Each category is scored out of 10, and the overall score is a weighted average. 8.0 or more is strong, 6.0 to 7.9 is mixed with clear weaknesses, and below 6.0 is weak. When a bookmaker improves, its score goes up at the next review.
How do you rate betting sites?
Every bookmaker answers the same questions in nine categories, weighted by what matters most to South African punters. Sports betting and payments carry the most weight. How we rate bookmakers explains the full method.
