Our verdict on Playabets: KZN betting-shop roots, a fair bonus with a firm R15,000 ceiling
Playabets is one of the few South African bookmakers that can trace its story back to a single betting shop in KwaZulu-Natal in the 1950s, and today it runs a full online sportsbook licensed by the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator. Its welcome offer is a 100% first deposit match up to R3,000 plus 50 free spins, with a gentle 6x rollover on sports at odds of 1.80 or better, but winnings from the bonus are capped at R15,000 and you only get seven days. The promotions that stand out are for accumulator punters: a MultiBet Bonus that reaches 1000% and Bet Insurance on multis. The weak spots are the paperwork: withdrawal rules are hard to find before you sign up, the payout limits section is marked as still awaiting confirmation by Playabets itself, and the HelloPeter rating sits at 1.8 stars.
On paper the welcome bonus is the same size as YesPlay’s 100% up to R3,000, but the terms are friendlier for sports bettors. YesPlay asks for 7x at odds of 3.10, while Playabets asks for 6x at 1.80, which lets you use ordinary favourites and short-priced doubles to clear it. The catch is the R15,000 cap on bonus winnings, five times the largest possible bonus, which only matters if a big multi lands while you are still playing with bonus money.
Playabets also gives mixed signals on the minimum deposit for the bonus. Its terms say any first deposit from R50 to R3,000 qualifies for the match, while the claim steps on the same page tell you to “Go R100 or bigger”. We explain below why R100 is the safer choice.
For a brand with seven decades of history, the online product is modern: a six-tier Loyalty Club with weekly cashback and daily rakeback, horse racing with its own payout table, Lucky Numbers, and an Android app downloaded from the site. What it does not do well is tell new customers how and how quickly they will be paid: withdrawal methods, minimums, fees and payout times are not published on its public pages.
Punters who like multibets and want boosts and insurance on them, bettors who want a sports bonus they can clear at odds of 1.80 rather than 3.00 and up, horse racing fans, and South Africans who like dealing with a local brand with a KZN head office. The Loyalty Club also rewards regular players with cashback that grows by tier.
Anyone who wants to know exact payout times and withdrawal fees before depositing, iPhone users who want a native app, and punters put off by a weak complaints record. If you prefer the biggest name in the market, read our Betway review; for a free bet once you are verified, see the GBets review.

How we reviewed Playabets
We rate every bookmaker with the same nine-category model, so this Playabets review can be compared directly with our other reviews. We worked from the bookmaker’s own pages and terms, the gambling board’s licence records, app store listings, customer reviews and news coverage, and we compared each finding with what other South African bookmakers offer. See how we rate bookmakers.
Is Playabets legit? Licensing and safety
Yes. Playabets is a legal, licensed bookmaker in South Africa. The online site is run by Playabets MP (Pty) Ltd, registration number 2022/712478/07, which holds bookmaker licence 9-2-1-09689 from the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator (MER). The licence was issued in September 2024 under the Mpumalanga Gambling Act and is renewed each year on payment of fees. It names www.playabets.co.za as the licensed online premises.
The same company name and licence number appear in the site footer and in the terms and conditions, which is what you want to see. The footer also carries the badges of the Financial Intelligence Centre, the Mpumalanga board and the National Gambling Board, along with an 18+ notice.
A sister company, Playabets WC (Pty) Ltd, is listed among the bookmakers on the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board’s licence holder list. The MER licence itself approves no land-based premises, so any Playabets shops would sit under a different licence from the website.
From one KZN shop to a national website
The heritage is what makes Playabets different from most online brands. Its About Us page says the business “didn’t start online” but in a single retail betting shop in KwaZulu-Natal in the 1950s. It took the Playabets name in 1990 and opened its website in 2014. Playabets calls itself “South Africa’s proudly local, licensed betting site”, and the head office on the contact page is in KZN: Suite 2 FMI House, Ocean Dunes, Sibaya Drive, 4320. The licensed administrative address is in Mbombela, Mpumalanga.
Playabets does not publish who owns it or which group it belongs to. Its MER licence requires at least 40% black ownership with full voting rights. It also does not publish how many shops it runs today.
One point to avoid confusion: Playabets (also written Playa Bets, and trading as PLAYA) is a different company from Playbet and from Play.co.za. Check that the address bar shows playabets.co.za before you log in.
What to do if you have a dispute with Playabets
The terms set out a formal complaints route. Raise your complaint within 30 days of the event; support is reachable by live chat, email (support@playabets.co.za) or phone. Playabets says it acknowledges complaints within 24 hours and aims to resolve them within 10 business days, a target it can extend by another 10 business days for complex cases.
If you are still unhappy after that, escalate to the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator, which issued the licence. Keep screenshots of your bet slips, account balance and every message, and note the date of each contact so you can show the regulator that the 30-day and 10-day timelines were followed.
Licence and safety is 12% of the overall score. How we rate bookmakers
Playabets sign-up and FICA
Opening an account is quick; Playabets says it takes “two minutes”. Its welcome page sets out four steps:
- Sign up for a new account.
- Tick the 100% Welcome Bonus on the promotions page or the deposit screen. No opt-in means no bonus.
- Pick a payment method and make your first deposit.
- The bonus lands in your account, up to R3,000.
Only one welcome offer is allowed per person, family, household, residential address, email address, phone number, payment account and shared device. If someone in your home already has a Playabets bonus, you will not get a second one.
Playabets FICA documents
Like every licensed bookmaker, Playabets must verify you before it pays anything out. Its terms are blunt: “No withdrawal shall be processed until all required verification procedures have been successfully completed.” Playabets asks for:
- Your South African ID document, or a passport
- Proof of address, such as a utility bill showing your full name and address, no older than three months
- A bank statement no older than three months, as proof of banking (it can also serve as proof of address)
To upload them, click your name at the top right, open the verification section, choose ID Document or Passport, then add your proof of address. Playabets does not say how long checks take, so upload everything straight after signing up rather than waiting until you want to withdraw.
The terms also allow source of funds checks, enhanced checks for politically exposed persons, and “video and biometric verification”. Most punters will never see these, but if you deposit or win large amounts, expect extra questions.
Playabets sportsbook: soccer, rugby and horse racing up front
The live sports menu is shorter than the rule book suggests. On testing, the menu listed 17 sports, while the betting rules have sections for 33. Soccer, eSoccer, rugby, horse racing and cricket are featured at the top, and the menu has quick links for the English Premier League and the Bokke.

Sports and leagues
The featured list covers soccer, eSoccer, rugby, horse racing, cricket, tennis, basketball, golf and table tennis. Under More Sports you find American football, baseball, darts, Formula 1, ice hockey, MMA, MotoGP and volleyball. That is a solid core for South Africans who follow football, the Springboks and the Proteas, though it is narrower than the biggest sportsbooks. If you follow the local league, our PSL betting guide explains the main markets.
The rugby link to Playabets runs deep: in August 2023 the brand signed former Springbok Stefan Terblanche as a partner ahead of the Rugby World Cup, and the sports page carries a rugby promotion.
Horse racing
Horse racing has its own section, its own part of the betting rules and its own payout limits, which several rivals (GBets, YesPlay and Bettabets among them) do not offer at all. The sportsbook advertises a “1st past the post” feature and a racing multibet that lets you back up to four picks in one bet. Fixed-odds bet types in the rules include Win/Place, multiples, Trifecta and Pick 6.
Live betting and cash out
Playabets has an In-Play section for live betting. Cash out is available, but the rules say it “is not guaranteed” on every bet. Cashed-out bets do not count towards a bonus rollover, and you cannot cash out free bets or boosted odds bets.
Features for multibet punters
- MultiBet Bonus Win Boost: extra winnings on multis from two qualifying legs, rising to 1000% at 50 or more legs.
- Bet Insurance: a free bet refund on qualifying multis that lose by one leg.
- 2UP Early Payout: soccer bets marked “EARLY WIN 2 GOALS” are settled as winners if your team goes two goals up.
- Boosted odds: boosted prices and “Hot Pick” multis. One example on the sportsbook was a Rugby URC boost from 4.55 to 5.01.
What is not offered
Playabets does not promote a bet builder or live streaming. Boxing and netball have rule sections but did not appear in the live menu on testing. Virtual sports are not advertised.
Playabets maximum payouts
The headline limit is generous: R5,000,000 maximum winnings per sports wager, and the same per casino, Aviator or crash game wager. That is well above many local rivals (Bettabets caps single bets at R50,000 and Play.co.za at R2 million per bet).
There is a catch in how it is published. The payout section of the terms carries a note from Playabets saying the figures below still await its own confirmation. The betting rules also contain bracketed placeholder values, such as “Up to [40] selections” on a bet slip. Treat R5 million as Playabets’ published figure, but if you are chasing a large multi, ask support to confirm the limit in writing before you place it.
| Bet type | Maximum winnings |
|---|---|
| Sports, per wager | R5,000,000 |
| Casino, Aviator and crash games, per wager | R5,000,000 |
| Horse racing Win/Place | R30,000 |
| Horse racing multiples | R100,000 |
| Horse racing Trifecta | R250,000 |
| Horse racing Pick 6 | R500,000 |
| Welcome bonus winnings | R15,000 |
Worked example: you put R1,000 on a horse to win at odds of 40.00. On paper that returns R40,000, but the Win/Place limit is R30,000, so that is the most you would be paid. The minimum stake is R1, and Playabets says daily, weekly and monthly limits may apply, without giving amounts. No daily or weekly winnings cap is published.
Playabets welcome bonus and promotions
The Playabets welcome bonus is a standard 100% deposit match, but the details set it apart: a low odds requirement that suits sports bettors, zero-wagering free spins, and a hard R15,000 cap on what the bonus can win you. There is no sign-up credit or no-deposit bonus. For a wider view of current deals, see our betting bonuses in South Africa page.

100% first deposit bonus up to R3,000
Deposit between R50 and R3,000 and Playabets matches it 100% as bonus money, up to R3,000. Only the first deposit counts, and you must opt in on the promotions page or deposit screen; no promo code is needed.
The rollover is 6x on sports, horse racing and Lucky Numbers at odds of 1.80 or better, or 35x if you play casino games. You have seven days from your first qualifying deposit to finish it, after which any remaining bonus is forfeited. If you withdraw before you finish, “you lose the bonus and anything won with it”. Our guide to how wagering requirements work explains the maths.
Different games count at different rates towards the rollover:
| Game type | Contribution |
|---|---|
| Sport and horse racing, Lucky Numbers, slots and scratchcards | 100% |
| Sic Bo and poker | 50% |
| Gameshows, roulette, table and live dealer games, crash and instant games | 10% |
| Blackjack and baccarat | 5% |
The R15,000 cap, in rands
Winnings from bonus funds are capped at R15,000, which is five times the maximum bonus. Say you deposit R3,000, get R3,000 in bonus money and land a multi with it that pays R40,000. You keep R15,000 of the bonus winnings and the rest is lost. For most punters clearing a bonus with singles and doubles at 1.80 to 2.50, the cap will never come into play; it only bites on long shots. That is still far more room than GBets’ R500 free bet win limit.
R50 or R100? The minimum deposit conflict
Playabets’ own welcome page disagrees with itself. The terms say the match applies to deposits “between R50 and R3,000”, while the claim steps say “Go R100 or bigger”. R100 is also the minimum for the free spins. The full terms are normally the wording to rely on, but depositing R100 or more covers both versions and gets you the spins. Confirm with live chat first if you plan to deposit less.
50 free spins on Gates of Olympus
With a first deposit of R100 or more you also get 50 free spins on Gates of Olympus, with zero wagering on the winnings. The spin value rises with your deposit:
- R100 to R199: R0.20 a spin (R10 in total)
- R200 to R999: R1.00 a spin (R50 in total)
- R1,000 or more: R3.00 a spin (R150 in total)
MultiBet Bonus up to 1000%
The MultiBet Bonus Win Boost adds extra winnings to multis of two or more qualifying sports events. The top rate of 1000% needs 50 or more qualifying events, which very few bet slips will reach. Playabets does not publish the percentage for each number of legs, so check the boost shown on your bet slip before you place it.
Bet Insurance on multis
Build a multi with total odds of at least 10, with each leg at 1.35 or more. If only one leg loses, you get a free bet worth 100% of your stake, up to R1,000. For example, R100 on a five-leg multi at total odds of 12.00 that fails by one leg returns a R100 free bet.
Ongoing offers
- Weekly Cashback: up to 12.5% of weekly net losses on eligible games, live dealer and sports (Tuesday to Monday), paid as a bonus every Tuesday, up to R15,000, depending on your Loyalty Club tier. The Loyalty Club page mentions up to 15% at the top tier, so rely on the cashback terms and confirm your rate with support.
- Daily Rakeback: up to 10% of the house edge back, from 2% at Gold to 10% at GOAT.
- Loyalty Club: six tiers over 26 levels, from Bronze to GOAT, with XP that never expires. Coins and unopened mystery boxes expire after three months. Diamond and GOAT players get VIP account managers.
- 2UP Early Payout and Boosted Odds: on the sportsbook, with no opt-in needed for 2UP.
- Free Bet Showers: an Aviator promotion, not a sports free bet. Bet R50 or more at least five minutes before the “Rain” to have a chance at one of 1,000 free bets worth R50 each.
- Birthday rewards: the size depends on your Loyalty tier.
Playabets deposits and withdrawals
Depositing is easy, with a long list of South African payment brands. Withdrawing is where Playabets falls short on information: it does not publish withdrawal methods, minimums, fees or payout times on its public pages, so you cannot compare your options before you register. That contrasts with rivals such as FirstBet, which publishes approval-speed figures.
Deposit methods
Playabets says deposits “appear in your account balance immediately”. Its payments page groups the options like this:
| Type | Methods |
|---|---|
| Cards (Visa, Mastercard) | Wallet Doc, PayU, PayGate |
| EFT and instant EFT | Wallet Doc, Ozow, Capitec Pay, SiD |
| Mobile wallets | Apple Pay, Google Pay |
| Vouchers | 1Voucher, Playa Moola, Easyload, OTT, EasyPay, Blu Voucher |
The footer adds more logos, including Stitch, ABSA Pay, Payfast, 4All Voucher, Flash, Samsung Pay, Zapper, eezi and Masterpass. Capitec Pay and Ozow are the obvious choices for bank customers who want instant EFT, and the six voucher types mean you can fund the account with cash bought at a shop. See our voucher betting sites guide for how they work. Playabets does not list minimum or maximum deposits per method; the welcome match runs from R50 to R3,000.
Withdrawals
| Withdrawal detail | What Playabets publishes |
|---|---|
| Methods | Not listed on public pages |
| Payout time | Not published |
| Minimum and maximum | Not published |
| Fees | Not published |
| Before you can withdraw | FICA complete and full deposit wagered once |
| Cancel a withdrawal | Yes, via “Cancel WD” in the account menu |
The footer shows Standard Bank Instant Money, FNB eWallet, Nedbank iMali and ABSA CashSend logos. These are common withdrawal routes at South African bookmakers, but Playabets does not say which of its logos are for deposits and which for withdrawals.
Which withdrawal method should you use?
- Withdraw to a bank account in your own name that matches the bank statement you uploaded for FICA.
- If you deposited by card or EFT, check whether the cashier offers the same route back. See our EFT betting sites guide for typical bank timings.
- If you want cash without a bank account, look in the cashier for a cash-send option such as Instant Money or eWallet, which appear among the footer logos.
How to withdraw from Playabets, step by step
- Finish FICA verification first: Playabets processes no withdrawal until it is complete.
- Make sure you have wagered your full deposit at least once, as the terms require.
- If you have an active bonus, finish the rollover first or you lose the bonus and its winnings.
- Go to My Account, then Withdraw.
- Choose your method and enter the amount.
- Wait for the confirmation that Playabets sends once your withdrawal has been processed.
Fees to know about
- Playabets does not publish a withdrawal fee schedule, so check the cashier screen for any charge before you confirm.
- The deposit turnover rule works like a hidden cost: deposit R500 and you must bet at least R500 before you can withdraw any of it.
- Withdrawals can be delayed where verification is incomplete or where Playabets suspects fraud, bonus abuse or multiple accounts.
- Accounts dormant for six months are handled under the law and licence conditions; no dormant fee is published.
Our payment methods hub compares these options across South African bookmakers.
Playabets Lucky Numbers, casino and crash games
Playabets Lucky Numbers sits in a “Numbers” section billed as “Global Lotto Betting Online”, with its own part of the betting rules. It counts 100% towards the welcome rollover at 6x, the same as sports, so it can also be used to clear the bonus. Lucky Numbers winnings fall under the general maximum winnings clause. Playabets does not advertise Betgames.
The casino covers slots, live casino, jackpots, bonus buys, Megaways and instant games from providers such as Pragmatic Play, Evolution, NetEnt, Hacksaw, Red Tiger, Spribe and Big Time Gaming. Crash games include Aviator, Aviatrix, Jet X and Cricket X. There are also casino tournaments and prize drops. This review focuses on sports betting, so we do not cover the casino in depth; remember that casino play carries the much heavier 35x rollover.

Playabets app and mobile site
The Playabets app is Android only, and it does not come from Google Play. You download an APK file (version 5.2.9) from the Download App page and follow five install steps, including allowing installs from unknown sources in your phone settings. Playabets does not state the file size. Only download it from playabets.co.za itself.
There is no iPhone app in the App Store. iPhone users, and anyone who would rather not install an APK, can use the mobile site, which is built to work as a web app in your phone’s browser.
This puts Playabets in the same position as GBets, which also has no Android app on Google Play, and behind brands with store-listed apps. Playabets does not offer a data-free version of its site, something Betway does.
Usability and the app are 10% of the overall score. How we rate bookmakers
Playabets customer care number and support
The Playabets customer care number is 087 057 5292. You can also email support@playabets.co.za or use the live chat bubble that appears on every page of the site. Social channels are Facebook, X, Instagram and YouTube.
Playabets does not publish its support hours or the languages its agents speak, and it has no official WhatsApp line. That is thinner than rivals that advertise 24/7 chat, such as GBets and Mzansibet, or WhatsApp support, such as FirstBet and ReadySetBet.
Live chat is also the route for practical problems: Playabets handles password resets through chat or email once you have been verified. The help section has how-to guides on depositing and withdrawing.
For complaints, the terms promise an acknowledgement within 24 hours and a resolution target of 10 business days, with escalation to the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator. On HelloPeter, Playabets replies to every negative review, though its average response time on those is 41 hours 32 minutes, so do not expect same-day answers there.
Responsible gambling at Playabets
Playabets offers the main tools, though some of them need an email rather than a button:
- Deposit limits: daily, 7-day or 30-day, set yourself under My Profile, then Responsible Gambling, and confirmed with your password.
- Temporary deactivation: 1 day, 1 week, 30 days or 3 months, requested by email to support. Once set, it cannot be undone early.
- Account closure: permanent, also by email.
- Self-exclusion: temporary or permanent, on request.
Playabets does not list loss limits or reality checks. Its footer carries the line “Winners know when to stop” and a ban on under-18s.
If gambling is causing you problems, call the National Responsible Gambling Programme free on 0800 006 008, or WhatsApp “HELP” to 076 675 0710. The service is free.
Responsible gambling is 6% of the overall score. How we rate bookmakers
Playabets reputation and complaints: 1.8 stars, but it always answers
Playabets’ HelloPeter profile, listed under the name Playa (All Bets are One), shows a TrustIndex of 3.4 out of 10 and 1.8 stars from 546 reviews, 29 of them in the last 12 months. That is a weak score, in line with many South African bookmakers, but the response record is better than most: Playabets replies to 100% of negative reviews. GBets, Bettabets and Scorebet often leave complaints unanswered. Average response time is 81 hours 7 minutes overall and 41 hours 32 minutes on negative reviews.
The most common complaints are:
- Accounts blocked or closed with funds held, for example R20,000 frozen after a virtual card deposit and R3,992 held on a paused account.
- Withdrawals delayed or refused after a win, with accounts placed “under review” or closed for “irregular betting”.
- A steep bonus rollover and slow support.
Positive reviews mention fast payouts, the refreshed site with daily rakeback, attentive account managers and helpful staff at a retail branch. Playabets does not have a Trustpilot profile.
In the news, coverage is limited to the August 2023 partnership with former Springbok Stefan Terblanche ahead of the Rugby World Cup. We saw no reports of regulatory fines, sanctions or data breaches.
The terms let Playabets delay withdrawals while it checks for bonus abuse or multiple accounts, so keeping to one account, doing FICA early and not sharing devices lowers the risk.
Tips for betting at Playabets
- Deposit R100 or more for the welcome offer. It satisfies both the R50 and R100 wording on the bonus page and unlocks the free spins.
- Clear the bonus on sports, not casino. Sports count at 6x with odds of 1.80+, while casino needs 35x and table games count at 10% or less.
- Mind the R15,000 bonus cap. Anything above R15,000 from bonus money is lost, so huge long-shot multis make little sense while a bonus is active.
- Build Bet Insurance multis carefully. Total odds of at least 10 and every leg at 1.35 or higher, or the refund will not apply.
- Do FICA on day one. No withdrawal is processed without it, and Playabets does not say how long checks take.
- Ask support to confirm big limits. The R5 million maximum still awaits Playabets’ confirmation in its own terms, so get large-bet limits confirmed in writing.
Playabets questions
Is Playabets legit and legal in South Africa?
Yes. Playabets MP (Pty) Ltd holds bookmaker licence 9-2-1-09689 from the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator, issued in September 2024 for www.playabets.co.za. The licence number appears in the site footer and the terms. A sister company, Playabets WC (Pty) Ltd, is listed on the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board’s bookmaker list. It is a separate brand from Playbet and Play.co.za.
Who owns Playabets?
Playabets does not publish its owners or parent group. The licensed company is Playabets MP (Pty) Ltd, with a head office at Sibaya in KwaZulu-Natal and a licensed address in Mbombela. The brand says it began as a single KZN betting shop in the 1950s, took the Playabets name in 1990 and went online in 2014. Its licence requires at least 40% black ownership.
What is the Playabets minimum deposit?
For the welcome bonus, the terms say deposits from R50 to R3,000 qualify for the 100% match, but the claim steps on the same page say R100 or more, which is also the free spins minimum. Depositing at least R100 is the safe choice. Playabets does not publish minimum deposits for each payment method; the minimum stake on a bet is R1.
How long does a Playabets withdrawal take?
Playabets does not publish payout times. Its how-to guide says only that you will get a confirmation once your withdrawal has been processed. Before you can withdraw, your FICA verification must be complete and your full deposit must have been wagered at least once. Withdrawals can also be delayed while Playabets checks for fraud, bonus abuse or multiple accounts.
What documents do I need for Playabets FICA?
You need a South African ID document or passport, a proof of address such as a utility bill with your full name and address no older than three months, and a bank statement no older than three months. Upload them by clicking your name at the top right and opening the verification section. Larger accounts may face source of funds or biometric checks.
Is there a Playabets app?
There is an Android app, but it is an APK file (version 5.2.9) downloaded from the Playabets website rather than Google Play, and you must allow installs from unknown sources. There is no iPhone app in the App Store. iPhone users can use the mobile site, which works in the phone’s browser.
What is the Playabets welcome bonus?

Yes. Playabets lists Capitec Pay, Ozow, SiD and Wallet Doc under EFT payments, and says deposits appear in your balance immediately. You can also pay by card through Wallet Doc, PayU or PayGate, by Apple Pay or Google Pay, or with vouchers including 1Voucher, OTT, Blu Voucher, EasyPay, Easyload and Playa Moola.
Does Playabets offer cash out?
Yes, Playabets offers cash out on sports bets, but its rules say availability is not guaranteed. You cannot cash out free bets or boosted odds bets, and bets you cash out do not count towards a bonus rollover. If you are clearing the welcome bonus, let qualifying bets run to the end so they count.

Yes. Playabets has an In-Play section for live betting and a separate horse racing section with its own rules, including Win/Place, multiples, Trifecta and Pick 6 bets. The sportsbook also advertises a “1st past the post” feature and a racing multibet with up to four picks. Horse racing counts 100% towards the welcome rollover.
